Celebrated actress, Kate Henshaw has described what happened at the Lekki Tollgate as genocide saying the protesters were largely peaceful when the soldiers opened fire on them.
Henshaw who was at the venue of the protest said in a BBC News Pidgin interview monitored by Church Times; hours after the incident that the action of the soldiers has clearly shown that the government was not sincere in its promise for reform of the police.
She said she never expected that soldiers would unleash terror on peaceful protesters. She said there was no way the protesters could have got home within the space of the time of the curfew.
Henshaw who was in tears throughout the interview said, “what just happened today is genocide. First, they put off the camera and then light and sent soldiers. There was nothing wrong if they had sent the soldiers to keep vigil with the protesters. But they were shooting. What kind of country is this, people want to live, but the government does not want them to live. What has happened has clearly shown that the panel that Sanwoolu set up was yahoo yahoo. Why is it so easy to take a life?
She said she was pleased with the way Sanwoolu handled the protest until he imposed a curfew hurriedly. “People were sitting on the ground and holding the flag and they were being shot. See blood, see bullet. We are not in war. Nobody carried any weapon.”
