Kumuyi to PFN leaders: Burn the bridge behind you

by Church Times

The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Williams Kumuyi has charged pastors to burn the bridge behind them if they truly want to exceed their limits in ministry.

He gave the charge while addressing participants at the just concluded biennial conference of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria in Abuja

Kumuyi who spoke on the topic, Exceeding previous limits of life and ministry , said the only way for church leaders to experience growth is to first find out their present limit and then burn the bridge behind them.’

By that he meant they should forget both the good and the bad and aim at the higher calling of God.

Kumuyi said, ‘You must ask yourself what is the state of your ministry. Identify where you are. You must know your ministry experience your family and your Christian experience. Are you experiencing growth?

You must ask, how spiritual, how sacred, how saintly is the ministry. And you must tell whether you are growing or you still tell the same old story. ‘

Drawing lessons from the life of Elijah and Elisha, the octogenarian preacher said Elisha experienced a double portion of the Power of Elijah and he was able to do greater exploits.

While agreeing that the spirit of Elijah rested on Elisha, he said, ‘Quantitatively. No. It was double portion of Elijah’s power that rested on Elisha.

He performed double the miracle of Elijah. While Elijah’s ministry was more about judgment, that of Elisha was about healing and restoration. He healed the bitter water, and gave prophetic word during famine in Israel which led to abundance.’

Kumuyi said it was important the church leaders burn the bridge behind before burning for God.’

Referring to the transition of power from Elijah to Elisha, he said also that they have to bond with their benefactors just the way Elisha bonded with Elijah.

‘What you see is what you get and what you get determines what you will do. If you don’t see anything and don’t get anything you won’t be able to make any impact.’

Kumuyi also counselled that the church leaders must covet the blessings for beneficiaries beyond the borders through God.

Still citing the example of Elisha he said he was still a blessing even inside the grave.

Kumuyi emphasised further that the way to burn the bridge behind is not get entangled with the affairs of this life.
Quoting from the Bible Kumuyi said, :No man that wareth entangled himself with the affairs of the world and would still be able to please the person who sends him’

He urged the pastors to make it a habit of finding out what pleases God in their daily walk with God.

Talking about biblical Samson he told his listeners ‘Be careful how you talk. It was the tongue of Samson that led to his fall. It was the careless conversation he had with Delilah that made him disclose the secret of his power. The sin of Samson is not just fornication but of revealing the secret of his power.’

Kumuyi cautioned against misuse of the tongue and urged pastors to make growth in their lives and ministry a pursuit.
