Renowned Nigerian documentary photographer, Dayo Adedayo, has said the DAP Experience Centre in Lagos is his own way of giving back to society stating that it was not set up for commercial purposes.
He made the submission at the yet to be completed centre on Tuesday August 19 to kick off the celebration of World Photography Day which took place at the centre.
Photographers and lovers of photography were at the event to celebrate the ever evolving world of photography.
The event also had in attendance the former Ogun state governor and veteran journalist, Chief Olusegun Osoba, present as chairman and a host of notable individuals.
Adebayo described the DAP experience center, as symbolic.
According to him, ” It reflects the ever evolving journey of photography, a craft that is never static, always growing and forever pushing boundaries.”
He insisted that the center was not created to be a commercial enterprise, but rather a platform to train, learn and promote photography, free of charge and also a way for photographers to sell their images to the world.
He says, “It is my way of giving back, of ensuring that the next generation of Nigerian and African photographers have a home where creativity is nurtured, skills are sharpened, and stories are told without restriction.”
The facility, though still under construction already houses an exhibition space for analogue pictures, a photography museum, a digital immersive experience floor, a boat room simulating travel from Lagos Marina through the Niger Delta, a photography library and a café.
Also in the centre are a memorabilia store with over 400 Nigerian-themed items, and a garden for relaxation and outdoor photography.
He states further, “The DAP Experience Center itself, is a world of photography and culture.” While stressing that photography is a tool for memory, truth, and storytelling.
He observed that images have influenced public discourse, including recent events in the country.
He also paid tribute to Chief Osoba, lauding his legacy in journalism and public service noting the relationship between photography and journalism as a means of storytelling.
Adedayo urged Nigerians to embrace and support the growth of photography while also praying that the “ the images we create continue to shape minds, inspire change, and capture the soul of our great nation,” .
