Senior Pastor of Day Star Christian Centre, Sam Adeyemi has lent his voice to the growing debate on tithe and offering describing the law on tithe as recorded in the Old Testament as an expired law which has no relevance in the New Dispensation.
This is contrary to what he had preached in the past. It also goes against the grain of teachings by those he regards as fathers of faith.
Adeyemi who took time to preach on the subject of giving to his Lagos, Nigeria Church members on Sunday February 25, urged his listeners not to entertain any guilt for not paying tithe adding that “People should not give out of fear”
He said he personally took interest in the tithe debate, did a lot of study and came to the conclusion that God is not angry with anybody that does not pay tithe neither is the person under any form of curse.
He said, “I have been following the tithe debate. I discovered that it has been an age long debate and it will be on for a long time. My first observation is that church people are behaving as if we own the word tithe. We don’t own the word. It is an English word. I want to say clearly that tithe as practiced under the law of Moses has expired. The death and resurrection of Jesus has put paid to it. It has expired.”
While explaining that there are different types of tithe he said, “All the requirements of the law were satisfied under Christ adding however that “It is a gamble to say Jesus never paid tithe. The fact that it was not written that Jesus paid tithe does not mean he did not do it. I can also claim that Jesus did not go to the toilet because it is not written. 18 years of his life were not recorded in the Bible. When he was born his parents satisfied the requirements of the law. John 21v25 says there are many things he did that were not recorded. Jesus did not say it was wrong to pay tithe in his day.”
Adeyemi however stressed again at the risk of repeating himself that Tithing as it is in the law has expired. He noted, “The law of the spirit of life in Christ has made us free. Romans 8 clearly tells us that we are free. No Christian should feel guilty for not paying tithe. There is nothing you can add to what Jesus did to be qualified before God. When Jesus said it is finished it was finished. Gal 3v13 says Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law. A Christian is not cursed because he or she did not pay tithe. A Christian should not give out of fear. A Christian should give out of love. We are free from guilt, from fear. We are in a dispensation of grace.”
He however warned that though we live under grace man will have to bear the consequences of his action. “If you commit murder, you realise what you did and you repent God will forgive you. But bear in mind that Police will arrest you and prosecute you. The forgiveness of God does not remove the consequences of our action.”
The church leader who has many young people in his church and who served under Rev George Adegboye of Rhema Chapel in Ilorin, Nigeria before he established his own ministry however noted that a stingy Christian will be greatly hurt.
“You are free to decide what to give. But if you sow sparingly you will reap sparingly. Tithing as practiced under the law has expired but tithing as a general principle cannot expire. A Christian is free to give any percentage of his money. But just bear in mind that 10 percent is still part of the number. If somebody chooses to give 10 percent he should not be condemned and if he gives less or more than that he has a right to decide on what to do”
Earlier, he gave a graphic illustration on where and how the believer should give. Using scriptures to back his points he said, “We should give to the poor because giving to the poor is giving to God. If we love God we should give to men. We should also be responsible citizens by paying our tax. We should give to our parents and be a blessing to them. We should give towards the work of God and we should give to servants of God and we should give to our immediate family and take care of them.”
He however lamented that many Christians have been quite intolerant of one another on the tithe debate noting that we “all know in part. Priscilla and Acqulla had to put Apollos in the way of the gospel. But Apollos had been preaching the John’s gospel before Priscilla and Aquilla came to correct him and show him the message of the kingdom. We all know in part. As we grow we learn and adjust.”

Liberation. I will not give my tithe because of Mal.3:9 oh nooo. I will give more than tithe
Christ delivered us from the curse of d law and not from d principle of d law.
Since d fall of man humans have always bn vulnerable to d old whiles of Satan.
We must be careful not to remove ancient landmarks in order to draw more followers to ourselves. And when a man of God is gradually going into error, we must not only pray for him, we must raise a red flag so he can reconsider.
What was wrong under the old testament does not become right because Jesus died to save us. He did not die to free us from d responsibility of doing right but from d irresponsibility of doing wrong.
Adultery and murder are still sins in d New Testament. God’s definition of robbery will not change with modern xty. You’ll be surprised to see Moses and Jesus chatting cheerfully in heaven bcs both collaborated harmoniously as servant and master to establish God’s will on this side of eternity.
What Abel, Abraham and d likes did by inspiration became landmarks which God endorsed under d law and eventually referenced by d Apostles in Hebrews 6-13.
Although Paul and d Apostles could not teach it fully bcs the church then was still largely in her babyhood stage.
We are called to do d works of Abraham and not look for excuses not to carry our own cross. Remember, it was this trend of irresponsibility that led Adam out of d garden.
Folks were robbers in the Old Testament for tithe default and after grace- to fulfil d law was given, suddenly we are discharged from that ancient landmark and kingdom duty.
How can we tell folks to pay their 30% tax faithfully as dictated by earthly tyrant govts run by d devil and give God what we wish from whatever is left. Which kingdom have we ended up serving. Jesus made it clear DT there are things that belongs to Ceaser and there are things that belongs to God.
Now let me come to something perhaps more serious and that is d real purpose of tithing: THE FEAR OF GOD! Deu 14:22,23 reads- ‘Thou shall truly tithe all d increase of thy seed, …that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always…’ Many think tithing is a fight of money, no! A thousand times no!!! Its a battle for d soul of man. Whose in charge? God or mammon! Every time the issue of tithe or first fruit comes up its always an issue of the fear of God. Before God brought it up in Mal 3, He said in chapter one ‘ if I be your master were is my fear?’. Remember also when God waited for Abraham to redeem Isaac (the first born of promise) and he did not, God ordered him to offer him as a sacrifice on mount Moriah. When he attempted it, God said ‘now I know that you fear me’.. See, anyone who encourage us to drop this landmark offerings which God is laying claim to is telling us to drop d fear of God.
In conclusion, the way God wants us to live in the new is not fundanentally different from d old Testament save and except the blood of animals fulfilled by Christ’s blood. A new heart has bn given to d believer and God has written his laws in it. By our new creation status, We now have capability to do above the requirements of d law- not less.
We do nothing anymore by canal commandments but by a higher law of love and faith in our God and His kingdom as exemplified by our father Abraham b4 d law.
If therefore they gave everything in d early church, its a shame that we debate tithes and firstfruits at this time in church history. So long as Melchizedek is alive, the seed of Abraham knows what to do. One thing this debate has done however is to deepen our faith and resolve to do more from a right standpoint and a better paspective.
I submit that we know in part and prophesy in part. A man of God does not cease to be one simply bcs of his perspective on an issue. We must only learn to provoke one another to love and to good works.
Keep loving God! keep loving His men!! keep loving the brethren!!!
You are blessed
Wow! I am glad Pastors are gradually realizing and correcting the errors they have been preaching. God bless Sam Adeyemi
indeed u are a genius u wrote like a professor of d word of God am proud of you tithing has been there before we were born so let d holy spirit guide his people to d truth even me am confused n I don’t know whom to believe anymore yet I will continue to do my own part for the kingdom of God
Pastor Adeyemi only spoke the half truth about tithe. He didn’t come out straight to say that tithe was not meant for Christians and that it is not relevant to them. Tithe was meant for the Levites and it was food for them. He didn’t tell us that God changed the Levitical priesthood with Christ and Christ didn’t require tithe from us. He lied when he said the principle of tithe still continues. There’s a total change of the law of tithe (Hebrews 7:11-12).
There’s a new order of giving in the church of Christ and it doesn’t in anyway follow the principle of tithe. It is not a percentage and it is not food. It is also not meant for some particular set of me like the tithe was meant for the Levites. The giving in the church of Christ is meant for the Saints, that’s the believers. This means that the collection is meant for everybody in the church. So it is not meant for so-called men of God or owners of the denominations. Again the giving or collection is only to be done on every first day of the week when the church comes together to fellowship, and each person is to give as he may prosper. (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). Then the giving is to be done as a matter of generosity and not as a grudging obligation. Everyone is to give as he purpose in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity. The giving is to be done cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:5-7).
He didn’t come out categorically to tell the church to stop paying tithes to him. Rather he encouraged them to pay more than tithe to him. He was only being smart as far as I am concerned.
Let him expose his church members to the truth of the scriptures about giving by teaching them the new order of giving in the church as taught by Paul in 1 Corinthian 16:1-2 and 2 Corinthians 9:1, 5-7). And then allow them to form their own opinion about what the Bible teaches concerning giving in the church.
Actually, he did say all those things. I was in church for all four services. This post is a summary that doesn’t capture Al he said so please drink water.
Hebrews 7 doesn’t in any way state that the change of Priesthood meant tithes have been abolished. It clearly states that then, men who died received tithes but now Him that lives receives tithes. Kindly study that scripture once again.
Besides, tithing didn’t originate from the law, it was added to the law. And yes, the tithing according to the law, was abolished with the law. But we are Abraham’s children and give tithes according to the faith of Abraham who was the first to give tithes. Since the law didn’t introduce tithing, the fulfilment of the law by Christ, and the abolishment couldn’t have affected tithing.
Note that tithing is not a freewill offering. It is not the kind you give as you have purposed in your heart. You give the tithe in the exact amount He asked for: 10%. What if you don’t give It? God is not going to curse you because He has already blessed you, but you would be setting up yourself for financial hardship that no amount of prayer can get rid of. You cannot be praying for what your tithe should take care of.
It is only the stingy that argue about tithing. When they pray to God, they demand nothing but answers but when the Lord demands the tithes thereof, they start quoting scriptures upside down. What is the big deal about giving 10% and keeping 90%? Why is man like this?
If you believe that rvd Sam Adeyemi preached half truth concerning tithing then go ahead and gives us the whole truth and let see if what you call whole truth is not half to others.
Are you a member of The Church of Christ?
I think you’re very correct sir.
Jesus said:
1). Heaven and earth will pass away, but not a jot of God’s word will go unfilled.
2). He said He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. That was why he expantiated more on the law that forbids adultery and murder. That even mere looking lustfully at a woman, you have committed adultery in your heart. And mere getting angry with a man without a cause endangers you to be charged with murder.
3). Finally Jesus told all regarding the issue of tithes “THESE YE OUGHT TO DO….”
If Jesus says these ye ought to do, then THESE YE OUGHT TO DO. Because he likened word doers to those who built their house upon the rock.
Am not a pastor but a businessman, marketer and blogger. I would would have been the most happiest, at the prospect of keeping my tithes and saving more money. But nope. I will never allow my interest to keep and save more money override God’s interest. Having and understanding of the rewards that follow and knowing Him that He keeps His covenants as a faithful faithful Father, Friend and Senior Partner. I see it as an opportunity to prove Him.
Did the Apostles of Christ collect tithes? No. They could not because they weren’t Levites or else they could be persecuted for taking on them that which did not belong to them.
Giving in the new dispensation is according as a man purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity for God loves a cheerful give. This is then further qualified by “he that soweth bountifully shall also reap bountifully and he that soweth sparingly shall also reap sparingly.
Paul never collected tithe neither any of the other apostles.
Thank you brother!
Well said. Thankfully, none of these people are God. Their opinions are not relevant to the written and unbreakable Scripture. Pastor Adeyemi changed his teaching from what he’s taught in the past because he’s a man. Humans know in part, but God knows fully. I am a Tithe-payer and even pay more than 10% from a particular income. I’m a blessed man with a very good life and many businesses. My God is faithful to His words. Those who know-it-all can keep their opinions and money, and continue to fight God’s church, thinking they are doing God a service. A wise person would have kept what s/he knows to her/himself and shut their mouths, instead of trying to prove smart with Scriptures and claim to be authorities on a subject they don’t fully grasp. I am a fully qualified UK solicitor and owner of businesses. I am also a qualified Nigerian barrister and solicitor. So, I am not a child or unlearned person who is compelled/lured to tithe. People should genuinely ask God to lead them in understanding this matter, rather than falling for “Internet sensation” or trends. The voice of men/many have never been and will never be the voice of God! To your own tent, people.
Well spoken my brother.
Pls “these ye ought to do” pls give biblical references thanks
“These ye ought to do” pls state biblical references thanks
God bless you sir.
God bless you.
On this, Sam Adeyemi goofed big time
TITHING CONTROVERSY- Literal and purposive interpretation
© Ayo Ayo London, UK 2017 (Featured in Nigeriaworld)
Tithing has always been a divisive subject among the Christians but the controversy has deepened in the past few months. While some devotees remain unperturbed and remain resolute in their beliefs and convictions, there are those who have found their voices, confidence and platform to express their long- held views and scepticism. Moreover, a sizeable number of believers have become bewildered, not entirely sure of which side of the argument to lean. The critics believe that tithing is no longer relevant and therefore should be declared incompatible with the modern times Christian ethics and practices. The beliefs of some people have also evolved over the years, while they never had strong held opposing views about tithing but until recently, courtesy of the recklessness of some leaders; it is arguable that the problem is not the “principle” but the “persons”. In Matthew 23:23, Jesus rebuked the “persons” but upheld the “principle” of tithing.
Tithing is a spiritual precedent, for example, the UK does not have a written constitution yet one of the most law abiding nations on Earth. As one of the sources of law, the court uses judicial precedent (Common law) where judges make current and future decisions based on the judgement made in past cases. For example, the case of Donoghue vs Stevenson [1932] (google if you can) the court ruled in 1932 that “you must love your neighbours and must not cause them harm”, it does not matter if your name is Donoghue, Stephen, Jade or John, the same principle of this ruling is binding now and hereafter. Many precedents were set in the bible and the principles remain potent, transferable and workable both now and in the future. Abraham vs Melchizedek [Gen 14:20] Abraham gave a tenth of everything. Jacob & God [Gen 28:22] Jacob gave the tenth. Israel vs Levites [2 Chro 31:5-6] Israel paid tenth to Levites. Levites vs Chief priest [Numb 18:25-28] Levites paid tithes to the priest.
The argument of the proponents therefore is that, the commandment about tithing was expressly between God and the Israelites, Jews, Levites etc. The Bible is full of spiritual precedents; many of the promises and principles in the old testament are applicable today and can work for any believer even though God was not speaking to us directly. For example, God & Israel [Deut. 28:1-14] The blessing of obedience. God & Solomon [2 chron 7:14] The blessing of repentance. God & Judah and Jerusalem [Joel 3:10b] ‘Let the weak say I am strong’. God & Israel [Exodus 14:14] ‘The Lord will fight for you’. Seed of Abraham & God [Isaiah 41:10-15] ‘Do not fear for I am with you’. Christ & Israel [Isiah 53 :5] By His ‘stripes we are healed’. While these precedents were not expressly between ‘us’ and God, the principles are honoured when we apply them. Tithing is a dependable, tried and true precedent. If you feel well after taking a particular medicine, that indicates its potency, the argument of the critics will therefore be valid if they can prove that tithing does not work. If something is not broken, why fix it? if tithing works for the practitioners, why the objurgation?
The bible can be given either literal or purposive interpretation. Because tithing places a demand and forbearance on us and our resources, it is often given literal interpretation by using the most basic, plain and ordinary meaning of the language; claiming it is old covenant and specific to the Jews. Purposive interpretation on the other hand, produces illumination and revelation, this is based on God’s intention in a particular scripture. It is therefore hypocritical to discriminate between what we interpret literally and purposively especially, when the latter will accrue some benefits to us. Among others, God’s intention for tithing is that there may be meat in His house; this intention is still relevant to the contemporary church; money is fundamental to functioning and fulfilling various obligations. There are people on the payroll and others whose means of livelihood and businesses are directly or indirectly interwoven with the Church. Many churches are playing phenomenal roles in their communities and nations; providing food, shelter and clothing for the vulnerable in the society; FREE medical care, education and training for the less privilege. A few churches have gone PLC; may God open their eyes.
However, there are a handful of leaders who thought they were invincible and untouchable, their recklessness and lack of transparency can be blamed for this outburst, confrontation and pandemonium. Such leaders need to retrace their steps. While our salvation is not based on tithing, it is equally important for the critics to thread with caution so that the exercise of their freedom of speech and conviction does not become a stumbling block to the weak.
I totally agree with your points, God bless you. There’s hope for the Church, it doesn’t matter how some have chosen to bastardized the faith.
I also believe that all these arguments are part of the antics of Satan to fight and demoralise the Church but thank be to God because he is a serial loser. I bless God for your life and insight, keep the fire burning.
Thanks for this.God bless you and increase you in wisdom
Can my great pastor answer question, Has Matthew 5 :17 – 20 change?
Matthew 23
[23]Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you give a tenth of your mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected and omitted the weightier (more important) matters of the Law–right and justice and mercy and fidelity. These you ought [particularly] to have done, without neglecting the others…. Please let’s have an understanding of this scripture. I find it ludicrous when Scriptures are quoted out of context..Ordinary meaning of the above when applied, states you are religious about giving tithe but the Weightier matters like right, justice n mercy have been ignored by you. THESE in this context could not have been used to qualify tithe , when three other words were used conjunctively! Enough of reading the bible through people, let’s spend time to study the bible.
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
“These” in the passage was not referring to the tithe but judgement, mercy, and faith. But take note that tithe was neither condemned.
This therefore means that even though God is interested in giving our resources, He is much more interested in our persons ie our attitude and characters towards one another.
God bless you.
God bless you Soji Omole…You have refused to allow the wind blow you off.
As far as I am concerned, people are not actually criticising the obedience to the paying of tithe but how it is utilized. It is the utilization of tithe, offering, sowing and others in the house of God that trigger the payment of tithes. Assuming it is well-utilized, those criticizing and judging men of God would have also joined in spreading the Gospel. This is my observation!!!
About Pastor Adeyemi, he is in-between the line; sitting on the fence. He is not saying we should not pay tithe but we should not do so with fear and anxiety. To me, it is old principles and Jesus Christ coming to earth has abolished the law and set every mankind free. This is his belief which he justifies with the scripture…in Romans 8. Pastor Adeyemi states giving is what God is more interested in and giving to those who are actually in needs…there are scriptures backup this. He also said it is good to give to the Church and men of God.
Meanwhile, those men of God who are still preaching the payment of tithe are not guilty either. It is their beliefs and they have the scripture to back up the payment.
My own observation:
1. To give is a good act.
2. Tithe, offering, pledges, sowing, seedings and all other forms are under giving
3. Whether it is tithe or any of the aforementioned, they are meant to take good care of someone – the people
4. Let us use our lives to make a great impact in the lives of the less privilege.
It is even very wrong to question how the tithe is used. It is akin to planting today and uprooting tomorrow.

Great discourse. I enjoy everyone contributions but i still feel i should pay tithe.
I don’t know why people are debating on this matter. Why are you looking for excuse to back yourself when you don’t want to give at all. Bible says at the end of time, the love of people will wax cold, the Lord further says that alot of teaching will go out and people will be deceived even some elect. As pastor Sam said, some things are good for you to do and if you don’t feel like don’t do it but if you have the Spirit of God in you, He will lead you into all truth. If you are truly a child of God, you wont argue with this but ask Holy Spirit for leading or do you want to say He doesn’t speak? Please let God lead you if you are confused and I advise you follow His leading truly. Remember, your whole life without Christ(not of mouth or celebrated name) will land you in hell. Fear God and follow God.
Further more, I don’t mind loosing things for the sake of Christ. Whether someone used it selfishly or not is not mine to judge. I have done my part as He told me and that’s mine to do.
The argument only arises because money is involved. And those that argue are looking for excuse not to pay tithes. We don’t even need to ask for the leading of the Holy Ghost on this subject when it is clearly stated in His word what we ought to do.
Apt response. I had expected a man who claimed to have researched on the subject to be specific in his submission. It is not only wrong to pay tithe in this era of grace it is a sure way of attracting the wrath of God and consequently untold curses… Galatians 3:10. It is good the world knows that tithe was meant for only the Jews under the Mosaic law. It has never been a law unto any other. If anybody chooses to practise the law of Moses under the dispensation of grace that person is under curse if he does not or cannot practise 100% the whole gamut of the law of Moses.
Then again, tithing was only added to the law hundreds of years after it was practiced by the heroes of faith. Therefore, the abolishment of the law cannot disannul the principle of tithing.
I believe you erred with this opinion. To balance this please study Jesus statement on this matter in Matthew 23:23. And you will have a better understanding on this subject matter.
God bless you and His Church in Jesus name.
Are you for real? That you don’t need the Holy Spirit for the interpretation on whether to pay tithe or not. You better know that even Jesus Christ told His disciples that He will send the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to them. You need to ask God to help you in your life as a believer. Read all the books Paul wrote, then you will gain more understanding through the help of the Holy Spirit. Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.
2 Timothy 2:15. In everything we do as children of light, we need the Holy Spirit of God. You need to understand that the Israelites were commanded to give 10% under a covenant that couldn’t make them perfect (Hebrews 7:19,9:9). We as believers have the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which does cleanse our conscience (Heb 9:14). The old covenant gave us condemnation, while the new covenant gives us justification and the peace of God. People who entrust their lives to Jesus don’t worry about whether tithing is commanded in the New Testament. Some people acts as if Christ liberated us from the Law of the old covenant so we could keep more physical blessings for ourselves. That’s false – Christ liberated us so that we can be free to serve Him more, as loving children and not merely as slaves. He frees us so we can have faith instead of selfishness. And that was achieved after Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again. Most Christians today are living their lives based on the Old Testament, before the cross. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John was all about Jesus before the cross, under the law (Gal 4:4). Most Christians today still mock Jesus by the way they practice Christianity,as if Jesus hasn’t gone to Calvary. Many churches today have been riddled with what I need to give before being blessed. Some say I paid tithe before God blessed me. Jesus has already blessed us with all the spiritual blessings. Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:26-27). After the Messiah’s perfect sacrifice, other sacrifices would no longer be needed nor mandated by God. That is why God could allow the temple be destroyed and it’s sacrifices to cease. And in Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus was speaking to them about Himself being the fulfilment of the law that has been spoken about by the prophets. Paul never cited out any law of tithing. He only preached about Jesus the Love of God. To reconcile us back to God which is the original plan of the Creator (2Corinthians 5:11-21). Paul only talked about being generous as a Christian.
We shall all see the light and it will show us the way. Just do things according to God’s law
My comment is to McAthur
Paying my tithe is not to levite.
Not paying my tithe will not keep me in bondage.
It cannot make God to stop being God…paying of tithe and being faithful at it, is for me, and my children’s, children…to the fourth generation. When I stand to release my tithe fourth generations are standing (Abraham, Issac, Jacob and Jesus).
Paying of tithe works for me and I believe it. Devourers are permanently rebuked for my sake … Lots of benefits is mine because I pay my tithe…its my believe and it works for me.
Your pastor is now the ordained levite, according to the Scriptures.
Your pastor doesn’t eat your tithe because he knows better.
Your pastor is prospering not because of the tithe and offering but because he knows the word of God, he confesses and he works too and God blesses the work if his hands.
If u are a solving problems for people …money will come to you naturally.
Thanks u.
God bless you sir, for this insight. Let him who has hear, hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Open truth! This is new Adam ministration which is christ Jesus!
