Primate of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, The Most Revd Henry Ndukuba has warned that any bishop that gives money to influence his election to become one in the communion will give account on judgment day.
Ndukuba gave the warning while addressing priests of the Church at a recent All Anglican Clergy Conference in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Primate said he was told some priests were distributing envelopes purportedly to influence votes and to get some people elected to become bishops.
He said, “when any bishop comes around and tells you, don’t worry, we will make you a bishop, we will create a diocese, don’t mind the Bishop. A bishop only has one vote, And some are saying they are influencing the election of bishops.
“They are passing envelopes around. As far as we are concerned we will do what God wants us to do to the glory of God. This belongs to him.”
He said he has written the bishops in the church and told them to be careful of getting involved in financial inducement to elect priests as bishops. “I told them to be careful because we will answer to God.
“Both the person who is pushing it out and the person who is giving it will face God’s judgment. God is a consuming fire. I want to see Jesus. I don’t want to miss heaven after wearing all these garments.”
He said the inter-diocese transfer would only happen when it necessary and should not be a way of settling scores. He urged the priests to make up their minds on who to serve. He pleaded with them not to be discouraged if they serve on difficult ground.
According to him, “difficult ground is a preparatory ground.”
