Process of electing our new president still ongoing- Nigerian Baptist Convention

by Church Times

The Nigerian Baptist Convention has said the process of electing a new president for the church is still ongoing.

This is a confirmation of a report by Church Times Nigeria on Sunday, January 3 that the election of Rev Israel Akanji has not been concluded contrary to reports in some circles.

The Public Relations Officer of the convention, Pastor Eben Durodola, said in a statement on Tuesday that the process is yet to be concluded.

He noted that there was no time in the history of the church that the laid down procedure of electing a new president was circumvented.

He said by the rules governing the election of a new president, a search committee was inaugurated on December 3 2019 by the executive committee of the convention and inaugurated on January 3 2020 by the president of the convention, Dr. Samson Ayokunle to search for and recommend a new president for the convention.

The report of the search committee which recommended Rev Israel Adelani Akanji as the president was presented to the executive committee of the convention on January 2 2021 and it was unanimously accepted.

The report according to him will be presented to the convention in session in April.

He denied reports on social media that Pastor Akanji has been anointed adding also that there was no anointing service conducted for him as being reported on social media.

The statement noted further that Dr. Ayokunle applauded the search committee’s peaceful process of arriving at its recommendation while also calling for more prayers towards the April convention where the recommendation will be ratified.
