Rev Father Oluoma Chinenye John of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja has said getting an African pope is not something Catholics in Africa are clamouring for
in a recent Facebook post, Oluoma said what matters is to have a Pope that has been chosen by God himself.
According to him, getting an African pope to replace the late Pope Francis will certainly not make any difference .
Quoting the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama he wrote, ‘We are not praying for an African pope. We are praying for a good and Holy Pope who will shepherd the people. He can be an African, American, European or Asian.”
Oluoma then stated, Una don hear ba. All those agitating and clamouring for an African to be the next pope, you miss the point completely. Popes are not chosen on racial sentiments’.
He stated further, ‘Even if an African becomes the next pope, it will not give Africans any advantage over the others and vice versa.’
Whole noting that there is nothing like emilokan in selecting a new pope, he wrote, ‘We will get a new Pope according to God’s will. You may not like him, and you don’t have to, as long as he upholds the traditions and teachings of the church guided by sacred Tradition and the scripture.’
