Olukoya made the observation at the just concluded 50th graduation ceremony of the University of Lagos during which he was conferred with a honorary doctorate degree by the university.

Olukoya a former lecturer of the university and a scholar of note said he began motivating and encouraging young people in his church to excel in their studies in 2010 when he promised he would give a brand new car to any of them who graduates with a first class degree.

He said, “When I made the promise in 2010 about 17 of the students who attend our church came out with a first class degree across Nigerian universities. The following year the number increased to 20 by the third year we had about 180 students who had first class. The last time we did the exercise about 300 came out with first class. Many of those who earned first class degree from the University of Lagos are from the church.”

He then opined that the promise of a car must have motivated the students to work hard adding that government must device a means of encouraging students to work hard. “Our young people need motivation. They need something to propel them to succeed.”

While calling on the graduating students of the university to work hard he said “there is reward for working hard. There is nobody who works hard that would not get the reward.”

A total of 12,811 students received their degrees, diplomas and certificates at the UNILAG convocation. Of the lot 7,406 received first degrees or diplomas, while 5,405 received postgraduate degrees.

Of the number of graduates, 271 students were awarded first-class degrees, with 56 of them from the Faculty of Engineering; 2,277 students received second class upper degrees while 3,116 got second class lower degrees.

Among the graduates were 1,197 with third-class degrees while 131 graduated with pass degrees.
