The Christian Association of Nigeria has condemned the brutal killing of Usman Buda, a butcher, by some religious extremists in Sokoto State.
The body in a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh described the occurrence as barbaric while also extending heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Buda was allegedly murdered on Sunday, June 25 for making blasphemous statements about Prophet Mohammed. Incidentally, Buda is also a Muslim but reports say he belongs to the Izalla Sect
Reports indicate he was murdered by fellow butchers. His body was later removed by the police. Buda originally came from Tambuwal local government area but was living in Gidan Igwe, Sokoto North local government area.
He was known for selling cow entrails at the Sokoto Fish and Vegetables market, also known as Kasuwan Dankure before he met his death. There are no reports as regards the exact words he used against Prophet Mohammed
CAN in its statement said the freedom of religion and the peaceful expression of beliefs is not negotiable. It denounced any form of violence or jungle justice in the name of religion.
The Christian body noted that this tragic incident underscores the urgent need for increased efforts to foster religious tolerance, peace, and unity in our diverse society.
CAN said it would continue to advocate for the protection of all citizens’ rights, regardless of their religious affiliations.
“We urge religious leaders and followers to promote interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence for a harmonious Nigeria. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Usman Buda during this difficult time.”
