Methodist Bishop of Ikeja, The Rt. Rev. Stephen Adegbite has been elected Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter.
The election took place on December 14 at the Hoares Memorial Methodist Church, Yaba.
The former Chairman of the association, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola had completed his term in November. An election was scheduled for December 1. But the election did not hold because of misgivings among some members of the body.
Leaders of the five blocs of the association were said to have met severally to address some of the issues raised by the warring parties. It was then agreed that one of the blocs of the association, the Christian Council of Nigeria which comprises of the Methodist, Anglican, and Baptist churches, would present a candidate.
Bishop Adegbite was presented as the consensus candidate of the bloc. The electoral body of the association then met on December 14 to endorse him. The process was adjudged peaceful.
The national body of CAN has also resolved to have one single term for all its elected officials henceforth starting from the newly elected Lagos Chairman. Bishop Adegbite would thus be spending five years of a single term. This new policy will also be implemented at the national level.
Before now, the elected officials of CAN were allowed to serve for a renewable three-year term.
The new Chairman has been around for a while and had served the association in different capacities for many years.
He was the chairman of the CCN southwest. He was Director National issues of CAN and treasurer in the past executive of the Lagos State CAN.
In the next five years of the Christian body, the new chairman is expected to build on the template of oneness that was entrenched by the past executive. Christians in Lagos will also be expecting a CAN that will promote their interest.
