“Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word … And there was great joy in that city.” — Acts 8:4–8.
The story recorded in Acts 8:4–13 is one of the most dramatic spiritual confrontations in the Bible. It reveals a deep spiritual truth about cities, nations, and the unseen battle between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness.
Samaria was not merely a geographical location. It was a spiritual battlefield. For years a man named Simon had held the city under a spell. Through sorcery and demonic power he amazed the people and controlled their spiritual imagination. The entire population—from the least to the greatest—believed he possessed supernatural greatness.
Then one man arrived.
He did not come with political power, military strength, or earthly influence. He came with the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit. That man was Philip. His arrival triggered a spiritual earthquake that broke the power of darkness over the city.
This story reveals something extraordinary: God can use one surrendered person to overturn the spiritual atmosphere of an entire city.
Throughout history, revival often begins with one yielded vessel who carries the burden of God.
ONE MAN GOD USED — PHILIP, THE YIELDED VESSEL
Philip was not originally one of the famous apostles. He was first appointed to serve tables in the early church (Acts 6:5). Yet behind his simple assignment was a man full of faith, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit.
God often chooses vessels that men overlook.
When persecution scattered believers from Jerusalem, Philip went to Samaria. What looked like displacement was actually divine strategy. Heaven had selected a messenger for a city trapped in spiritual darkness.
Philip carried three powerful things:
- The Message of Christ
He preached Jesus as Lord and Savior. Revival always begins with the clear proclamation of Christ. - The Power of the Spirit
The Bible says unclean spirits came out of many crying with loud voices. Paralytics and the lame were healed. - The Compassion of God
Philip did not come to condemn the city but to rescue it.
When the gospel is preached in the power of the Spirit, something happens that no human program can produce:
Demons flee.
Sicknesses disappear.
Captives are liberated.
Joy floods the city.
Revival does not start with crowds.
It begins with one man or woman fully yielded to God.
ONE MAN THE DEVIL USED — SIMON THE SORCERER AND THE GOVERNING POWERS OF DARKNESS
Before Philip arrived, Samaria was already under another spiritual influence.
A man named Simon practiced sorcery and amazed the people. The Scripture says the entire city declared, “This man is the great power of God.” (Acts 8:10)
This statement reveals something alarming.
The city had mistaken demonic power for divine power.
Simon was not merely a magician performing tricks. He was a channel of dark spiritual forces. Behind him stood a network of demonic powers that had entrenched themselves in the spiritual atmosphere of Samaria.
Cities and nations often have spiritual strongholds.
The Bible speaks of principalities and powers that influence territories (Ephesians 6:12).
When such forces dominate a region, they create systems that maintain darkness:
Spiritual Deception.
False religions, occult practices, and counterfeit spiritual experiences.
Mental Bondage
People become conditioned to accept darkness as normal.
Cultural Entrenchment
Demonic practices become traditions and social norms.
Institutional Influence
Even political, educational, and social systems can be influenced by spiritual darkness.
Sometimes even churches are affected when believers become spiritually asleep.
A city can become spiritually oppressed when demonic forces operate freely through individuals who become vessels of darkness.
Simon was such a vessel.
He held the attention of the city because people are naturally drawn to supernatural manifestations—even when they originate from darkness.
But when heaven sends revival, the counterfeit cannot stand before the authentic power of God.
THE WICKEDNESS OF DEMONIC OPPRESSION IN A CITY
When demonic forces control a region, the effects are visible in every area of life.
The Bible says that through Philip’s ministry many who were possessed by unclean spirits were delivered. This means the city had been suffering under heavy spiritual oppression.
Demonic influence manifests in many ways:
Physical Affliction
Strange sicknesses, chronic diseases, paralysis, and unexplained suffering.
Mental Torment
Fear, confusion, depression, suicidal thoughts, and spiritual despair.
Moral Corruption
Addictions, sexual immorality, violence, crime, and social decay.
Spiritual Blindness
People lose the ability to recognize truth.
When demons rule a territory, the population becomes spiritually captive. Families break down, communities suffer, and entire generations grow up under spiritual oppression.
This is why the ministry of Jesus always included deliverance.
The gospel is not only about forgiveness of sins—it is about freedom from the dominion of darkness.
THE MOVE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND A CITY-WIDE REVIVAL
When Philip began preaching Christ, something extraordinary happened.
The power of the Holy Spirit confronted the forces that had ruled the city for years.
Demons that had hidden in the shadows were suddenly exposed.
They came out crying with loud voices.
Sicknesses disappeared.
The lame walked.
Paralyzed bodies were restored.
But the greatest miracle was not physical healing.
The entire spiritual climate of the city changed.
The Bible declares:
“There was great joy in that city.”
When revival comes, cities experience transformation:
Fear is replaced with hope.
Bondage is replaced with freedom.
Despair is replaced with joy.
The people who once followed Simon began to believe the gospel of Christ.
Even Simon himself was astonished by the power of God.
The revival in Samaria shows that no city is too dark for the light of the gospel.
HOW GOD CAN USE ONE MAN TO START A REVIVAL THAT TOUCHES MILLIONS
Throughout history, God has often chosen one yielded vessel to ignite revival movements that changed nations.
One man praying can shift the spiritual atmosphere of a generation.
Examples from history include:
THE MAN GOD USED TO IGNITE THE INDONESIA REVIVAL
Indonesia. The largest Muslim nation in the world. About 170 million people, and the majority are Muslims. Not Arabs. People of Southeast Asia. For years it was called the seat of Islam. The land was about 90 percent Muslim and 8 percent animist. There was witchcraft, fear, idols, and deep darkness.
But God decided to visit that nation. And when God visits a nation, hell cannot stop Him.
God looked and found one man. His name was Mel Tari.
Before the revival, Mel Tari was a school teacher in West Timor. He had a good job. Salary was coming in. He had security and pension. He had a wife and children and a comfortable home. But in the early 1960s God spoke to him. God said, resign from your job. Leave the city. Go to a remote village in the North and fast and pray.
It made no sense. Who leaves a good job to go where there is no light, no water, and no church? But Mel obeyed. He resigned. He took his wife and children and moved into a village that was 100 percent Muslim. No Christian was there. Only fear and witchcraft and animism.
And when he got there, he began to pray. He began to fast. Day after day he wept before God for that village. No meetings. No money. Just him, his family, and the Word of God.
Then the battle began. And I want you to hear this carefully, because some of you are going through the same thing right now.
First came poverty. They had almost nothing to eat. Sometimes for days it was only rice and salt. His children were hungry. His children were sick and there was no medicine to buy.
Then came rejection. His own family called him foolish. They said, why did you leave a good job? The village elders gathered and told him, you are bringing trouble to our village. The religious leaders stood against him.
Then came spiritual attacks. The witchdoctors cursed him. They poured out charms against his house. At night demons would manifest in the meetings. His house was attacked in the darkness. His wife would hold the children and cry, because she was afraid for their lives.
Then came government trouble. Because Muslims and animists were beginning to get saved, the local authorities came for him. They accused him of disturbing the peace. They questioned him. They put him in prison. They jailed him. They beat him until his body was wounded.
Then came fire. His hut was burned down. Not once. Several times they set it on fire. He would rebuild, and they would burn it again. Sickness also came. Malaria hit the children. The conditions in the village made them weak. His wife had to trust God every single day for food, for health, for strength.
But through all of it, Mel said, if I die here, I die praying. He did not run back to the city. He did not quit. He stayed on his knees.
And while he was staying, heaven came down. The Holy Spirit fell. First two or three people joined him to pray. Then ten. Then a hundred. People began to confess their sins. They brought out their idols and burned them in the open. They were delivered from darkness right there.
Then the news began to travel. Other villages sent messengers. Come and pray for us too. And that little fire in one village began to spread. Across Timor it went. Across Sulawesi. Across Kalimantan. Until the whole nation began to feel the wind of God.
Muslims started having dreams of Jesus in the night. Entire villages turned to Christ. Churches were planted where there was none before. Early in the morning people would gather near their mosques and they would begin to call upon the name of Jesus Christ.
This continued for years. And within about twelve to twenty years, a village that was once 100 percent Muslim became about 95 percent Christian.
Mel Tari later wrote it down in a book. He called it Like A Mighty Wind. That is what the people said. The Spirit came like a mighty wind, and we could not stop it.
Before God moved, Indonesia was 90 percent Muslim. After this visitation, Christianity grew by more than 15 percent. Think of it. Fifteen percent of 170 million. That is millions of souls. Millions of people brought into the Kingdom because one man said yes and refused to quit.
Now hear me, church. If you are reading this and you are in trouble right now, God sees you. If your family is rejecting you because of Jesus, God sees you. If you are under spiritual attack at night, God sees you. If they have taken you to prison, if they have wounded you, if they have burned what you have built, God sees you.
God used one man in a village, and he turned a nation. God can use you in your city. God can use you in your street. God can use you in your home.
Revival does not start with money. It does not start with a big name. It starts with obedience. It starts with prayer. It starts with a man or a woman who says, I will stay here until God answers.
If God could do it in Samaria.
If God could do it in the seat of Islam, He can do it in Nigeria. If God could do it in Asia, He can do it in America. He can do it your nation. If God could turn one village, He can turn a whole nation.
So today I am calling you. Will you give God your yes? Will you pray until something breaks? Will you fast until heaven opens? Will you stay even when the hut is burning?
Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray for every reader right now. Strengthen the one who is in weary. Comfort the one who is rejected. Deliver the one under attack. Bring out of prison the one who is bound. Heal the wounded. Rebuild what the fire has burned. Raise up Phillip’s of of this generation. Raise up the Mel Tari’s of this generation. Let Your wind blow again. Let revival and awakening break out again. Revive us again, O Lord. Let Nigeria rise. Let Africa rise. Let America rise again. Let the nations rise again In Jesus mighty name, Amen.
