It was a moment of pleasant surprise for students of Igbobi College on Monday, September 13, when their principal, Ven. Joseph Oyewale Adediji (FIELPN), appeared on the assembly ground wearing the exact same uniform as them to mark the first day of the 2026/2027 academic session.
While many students were initially taken aback, the principal used the lighthearted gesture to capture their attention before delivering a soul-searching message.
“I will be great” sermon
In his sermon titled “I Will Be Great,” drawn from Genesis 12:1–3, Ven. Adediji reminded the students that true greatness is not measured by wealth, popularity, social status, or worldly achievements. Instead, he noted that true greatness begins with God, is sustained by obedience, and is ultimately expressed through service to humanity.
Citing the biblical example of Abram, whom God called to leave his comfort zone for an unknown destination—the principal challenged the students to cultivate an enduring faith, discipline, and obedience in their daily lives.
He admonished them not to take their admission into Igbobi College for granted, stressing that their presence at the institution is neither accidental nor ordinary, but a privilege that carries significant responsibility.
“You have been brought here for a purpose,” he said. “God has positioned you in Igbobi College to be trained, molded, and prepared for greatness. The question is whether you will embrace the discipline, hard work, character, and obedience required to fulfill that destiny.”
He further urged the students to resist distractions, avoid negative influences, and remain focused on their academic, moral, and spiritual development.
Outstanding Alumni
While reminding the students of the school’s rich heritage, Ven. Adediji charged the students to see themselves as custodians of a legacy built by generations of distinguished “Igbobians” who have excelled in leadership, governance, scholarship, and public service.
He referenced notable alumni, including former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; former Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola; and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, alongside several other accomplished figures.
He challenged the students not merely to admire these figures, but to emulate the values of excellence, diligence, discipline, and service that distinguished them.
“You are not called merely to succeed,” he stressed. “You are called to become a blessing. The world does not simply need successful people; it needs men of character, men of integrity, and men who will use their gifts and opportunities to make life better for others.”
What parents say
Beyond the assembly, parents and students expressed delight over the introduction of school shuttle buses to convey students from Angus Hall to their respective hostels.
Described by many as unprecedented in the history of the college, the initiative significantly eased the logistical challenges typically associated with resumption day.
Several parents commended the school management for the thoughtful arrangement and warm reception.
One parent, Mrs. Afolasade, praised Ven. Adediji’s hands-on leadership style and the ongoing transformation within the college, noting that his passion, integrity, and reputation for excellence continue to inspire confidence across the Igbobi College community.
The assembly was brought to a close with prayers as students and staff committed the new academic session, the college, and their personal aspirations into God’s hands.
