The Bishop of the Mainland Diocese of the Anglican Communion, The Rt. Rev. Akinpelu Johnson, has made a case for better pay for church workers if the church where they serve can afford it.
He made the argument while addressing a congregation, as shown in a viral video online.
According to him, churches should lead by example in how they treat workers, citing his personal approach to prioritizing staff welfare.
He stated that the diocese has tried to ensure the minimum wage is paid, adding that they could do more once their financial position improves.
He argued that churches should review staff remuneration as a way to encourage them so they can serve wholeheartedly.
While noting that the Church has done a lot to impact society, he reasoned that those who serve the institution directly should also be well taken care of.
”How can a man serve you for 17 years and have nothing to show for it?” he queried, urging churches to do more for their employees.
He also urged Christians to show appreciation to service providers.
”I pay my mechanic more than what he charges because I am not paying for today; I am paying for tomorrow, so that the next time I need him, he will be glad to come,” he said.
The Anglican Bishop also cautioned against cheating people in business, warning that money acquired through fraudulent means brings a curse.
While noting that acquiring wealth is commendable, he emphasized that when such wealth is not put to good use, it becomes a problem.
