The pains and gains of change (1)

By Pastor Vincent Omegba.

Many churches and ministries are going to soon disappear from the world not because their leaders lack anointing but because they lack the wisdom to reengineer their practices to meet the zeitgeist of this season or era.

Every era or generation has its defining spirit or mood or characteristics which determine how they receive and understand situations and events that affect their lives. This is what zeitgeist means.

When leaders understand the zeitgeist of their time or seasons, they are able to introduce or allow changes that will make them better leaders and their organizations better equipped to adapt to changing times.

The leadership question

One of the major challenges or leadership pains that churches and ministries face especially in collectivist and high power societies of Africa (please google both terms) is that our leaders are so controlling and high-handed that they don’t allow followers to give them feedback.

Our leaders practice the Old Testament style of leadership where everyone goes to the prophet to know the mind of God. This makes it easy for people to be manipulated and exploited by their leaders.

It also mskes it easier for leaders to impose their culture and traditions on the those from the minority cultures.

In part 2, I will show how God changed the leadership system to a more democratic or for better word a more egalitarian system that enables participation by a large number of people. (Please don’t switch off because we’ve been told frequently by our leaders that God is not a democrat but guess what neither is he a controller!
