The Christian prayer does not address Satan- Mensah Otabil

Ghanaian preacher, Pastor Mensa Otabil, has urged Christians to shift their focus in prayer from constant spiritual warfare to a deeper confidence in their identity in Christ, describing such as the basis for victory in the believer’s life.

Speaking during a sermon shared on Facebook, Otabil who is the founder of International Central Gospel Church emphasised that many believers approach prayer from a position of fear and struggle rather than authority and rest.

According to him, the Christian life is not meant to be characterised by daily battles against unseen forces, but by confidence in what Christ has already accomplished on the cross.

“You haven’t accepted what Christ has done. You try to do it by yourself,” he said, warning that an overemphasis on fighting demonic powers reflects a lack of understanding of the finished work of Christ.

Pastor Otabil argued that when believers truly grasp their position in Christ, their approach to prayer changes fundamentally. Instead of constantly “binding and casting,” they begin to align with God’s will, trust His provision and walk in His protection.

Referencing the Lord’s Prayer as a model, the preacher noted that Jesus’ teaching does not centre on confronting Satan but on acknowledging God’s sovereignty.

“The Christian’s prayer does not address Satan,” he said. “The Christian’s prayer is addressing the One who owns the kingdom, the power and the glory.”

He further explained that even the phrase “deliver us from evil” reflects dependence on God’s power rather than human effort in spiritual battles.

For Pastor Otabil, this underscores the idea that victory is not something believers must fight to achieve, but something they inherit through Christ.

Building on this, he encouraged Christians to embrace a posture of rest and assurance, stressing that boldness in faith comes from understanding one’s identity in Christ.
“If you walk in that, you can boldly say no weapon formed against me shall prosper… not because of who you are, but because you are in Christ,” he said.
