The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has given more insight into his recent meeting with Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
In an interview published online after the visit on Sunday, October 4, Sowore recalled the circumstances that led him to the RCCG, while metaphorically describing how he felt sitting in the front row of the church auditorium like Jesus sandwiched between two thieves.
He said the chairman of his party, Mr. Sam Ajeigbe—who is a pastor in the RCCG—had informed him a day prior that the General Overseer would like to see him at the church’s National Thanksgiving programme.
Without much hesitation, he agreed to attend, saying he never thought the meeting with Pastor Adeboye would be a big deal.
Describing his seating position in the church, he said, “I was sitting at the front. To my left were the APC governor of Lagos State and his deputy. To my right were his commissioners. I felt like Jesus Christ in the midst of two thieves.”
While the programme was underway and an altar call was made, Mr. Ajeigbe beckoned to him that it was time to go and see the G.O.
Initially, he said he thought he was being set up to make it look as if he was going to give his life to Christ. However, he soon realized that they wanted him to meet with the G.O. immediately after the altar call because the G.O. would not be lingering long after the service.
He followed Pastor Ajeigbe eventually and was first told he would have to meet with Pastor Adeboye by his car before departure. But Pastor Adeboye, according to him, had left instructions that the meeting should hold in the church’s vestry.
”I was eventually taken to the vestry to meet Daddy G.O., during which he said to me that he had been following my political career, that he knows my ways are pure, and assured me that I would triumph, adding that he was praying for me,” Sowore said.
He confessed, however, that Pastor Adeboye added a caveat to his assurance—something he had expected he would say. Pastor Adeboye told him that “the world is the playground of Satan. It is a place of darkness.”
Before the meeting ended, he said he reminded Adeboye of how he hosted him decades prior. “I had just finished my NYSC and was not given my NYSC certificate. But back then, I was fighting against campus cultism, and I came to him to support our organisation.”
”I remember that day, he asked me to see the people counting money in another room. I saw them counting piles of money. That day, they gave me N10,000 to support my organisation.”
