Ebenezer Obey marks 84th birthday with two-day crusade, friends pay homage

Music legend Ebenezer Obey, has celebrated his 84th birthday with a two-day crusade in Abeokuta, Ogun State

The crusade themed: “Thy Kingdom Come” t was organised in collaboration with the Riye Council of Knights of Methodist Church Nigeria, Egba Diocese, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The well-attended crusades which held on March 25 and 26 featured several notable gospel artistes, such as Esther Igbekele, Joseph Adelakun aka Ayewa and Adegbemi Adewale, among others.

Evangelist Obey capped the crusade with his amazing music prowess at the Freeman Methodist Cathedral Auditorium in Abeokuta with a praise celebration

“one of the gospel artists at the event, Esther Igbekele described the event as great and wonderful programme while also thanking the celebrant Evangelist Obey for the honour of inviting them to minister.

Apart from the crusade there was a charity outreach for the less privileged in the community..

Obey said giving to the less privileged was his own way of showing gratitude to God for lifting him from obscurity to global stardom in the music industry

The main celebration for the 84th birthday however took place on Friday April 3rd, 2026, which coincided with Good Friday celebration.

He disclosed to this reporter earlier in his Ikeja, Lagos residence that, he chose to make the celebration a low key event because it fell on Good Friday

He expressed hope and prayed that God would grant him the grace to see his 85th which he said would be well celebrated

Obey who is now a Professor of Music at Olabisi Onabanjo University, revealed that the preparation for the 85th birthday has already taken off to guarantee its huge success.

He thanked God for the love and support he continues to receive from his family, fans, friends, associates and well-wishers around the world.

Family members and associates and friends gathered in the morning of Good Friday , April 3rd, to shower Obey with prayers praises to God and love on his special day.

This was closely followed by countless and timeless tributes of his life and music feats. Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was one for the first set of people to pay tribute to him describing him glowing terms.

Other tributes came from celebrities and music industry Captains such as Bimbo Esho the Managing Director and CEO of Evergreen Music Company, Femi Ajibode, the Mayor of Golden Tunes, Michael Ademisoye, Abiodun Salawe, of Yoruba Cultural Heritage, King Kakaki, Safari Adebola Muili, Ebere Ibile 1, aka Mr Safari Fuji, National PRO, Fuji Musicians Association of Nigeria, FUMAN, among others.

Born in Idogo, Abeokuta Ogun State on April 3, 1942 , commander Obey as he was popularly and widely regarded is one of the pioneers of modern Juju music.

Obey has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s cultural, spiritual and musical heritage. He is often credited for massively elevating the pure Yoruba breed folk juju music to National and international recognition with his matchless innovations , timeless and legendary musical prowess.
