Corruption in the Education System: Need for transparency in disbursement of NELFUND

For thousands of Nigerian students, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is more than a government initiative it is a lifeline. Established to provide interest-free financial assistance to eligible students, the scheme was designed to ease the burden of tuition fees and make higher education more accessible, particularly for students from low-income families.

However, recent complaints from some beneficiaries have raised concerns about the transparency of the loan disbursement process.

Students have alleged discrepancies between the tuition amounts approved through NELFUND and the amounts ultimately reflected in payments made to their institutions.

The allegations have prompted calls for greater accountability and an independent investigation into the management of the funds.

Several students who spoke on condition of anonymity claimed they received notifications indicating that specific amounts had been approved for their tuition. However, upon checking with their institutions, they allegedly discovered that different amounts had been recorded or applied. Many said they received no clear explanation for the differences despite making enquiries.

Among the institutions mentioned by some students is D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, where beneficiaries alleged that tuition figures uploaded to the NELFUND portal were higher than the actual fees charged by the institution. According to the students, while some National Diploma (ND) students paid tuition within the range of approximately ₦132,000 to ₦236,000 depending on their programme and level, they believe significantly higher figures were submitted for loan processing.

The students alleged that these discrepancies have left many worried that they may eventually be held responsible for loan amounts that exceed their actual tuition obligations. They are calling on the relevant authorities to examine the records and determine whether the differences resulted from administrative errors, inaccurate data submissions, or any other irregularities.

The concerns have also attracted the attention of student leaders. According to remarks attributed to Senator Comrade Babatunde Afeez Nass, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the association has received complaints from affected students and has encouraged them to pursue the appropriate legal and administrative channels while seeking clarification.

Reflecting on his own childhood, the NANS President reportedly recounted how his parents struggled financially and relied on loans to fund his education. He noted that the purpose of the NELFUND initiative is to remove financial barriers to higher education, not to create additional uncertainty or hardship for students.

Beyond the issue of loan disbursement, some students questioned how funds received by educational institutions are utilised.

They argued that despite significant public investment in education, many schools continue to struggle with deteriorating classrooms, inadequate laboratories, poorly equipped libraries, and other infrastructural challenges.

They expressed the view that public funds intended to improve education should be used transparently for the benefit of students rather than being diverted to unnecessary expenditures.

These concerns highlight a broader issue within Nigeria’s education sector the need for stronger financial accountability.

Public intervention programmes such as NELFUND can only achieve their objectives if beneficiaries have confidence that approved funds are accurately calculated, properly disbursed, and responsibly managed.

As with every investigative report, allegations must be distinguished from established facts. At the time of writing, the claims made by students remain allegations requiring verification through official payment records, tuition schedules, NELFUND disbursement documents, and responses from all parties involved.

To ensure fairness and balance, responses should be sought from NELFUND, the management of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, the Federal Ministry of Education, student union representatives, and other relevant regulatory bodies.

Their responses will help determine whether the reported discrepancies resulted from administrative procedures, institutional policies, processing errors, or any other legitimate explanations.

Transparency remains the cornerstone of every successful public intervention programme. Students deserve to understand how their education loans are calculated and disbursed, while taxpayers deserve assurance that public resources are managed responsibly and for the purposes for which they were intended.

The concerns raised by students over the disbursement of NELFUND loans reinforce the urgent need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of public education funds. Although the allegations remain subject to independent verification, they highlight the importance of ensuring that every approved loan reaches its intended destination without discrepancies or unnecessary delays.

Education remains one of the most powerful tools for national development, and programmes such as NELFUND were created to ensure that financial hardship does not prevent qualified Nigerians from pursuing higher education. Protecting the integrity of such programmes is therefore essential to maintaining public confidence.

An independent investigation into the reported discrepancies would help establish the facts, address legitimate concerns raised by students, and strengthen confidence in the scheme. If errors or administrative lapses are identified, they should be corrected without delay. If any individual or institution is found to have engaged in financial misconduct, appropriate sanctions should follow in accordance with the law.

Ultimately, the success of NELFUND should not be measured solely by the number of loans approved but by the confidence students have that every approved naira is accounted for and used for its intended purpose. For Nigeria’s education system to truly fulfil its promise, transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of public funds must remain at the heart of every educational intervention
