Watchful until he appears: A prophetic call to this generation

Soulish prayers

By John Abiola

Watch therefore, and pray always, that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” — Luke 21:36

The voice of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ still echoes through the corridors of time with undiminished urgency. His words were not poetic exaggerations. They were not symbolic alarms meant only for ancient ears. They were divine instructions issued for every generation that would live between His ascension and His glorious return.

He did not say, “Speculate.”
He did not say, “Calculate dates.”
He did not say, “Withdraw from responsibility.”
He said: Watch. Pray. Be ready.

Across Scripture, we see a sacred pattern: before every major move of God, He raises a watchful remnant. Before the First Coming, there was Simeon and Anna. After His resurrection, there were the Apostles. And now, before His Second Coming, there must arise a vigilant generation who refuse spiritual sleep.

This is not merely theology.
This is a trumpet call.

THE WATCHFUL REMNANT BEFORE THE FIRST COMING

Simeon and Anna: Faithful in an Age of Silence
The days into which Christ was born were not spiritually vibrant. Israel had endured centuries without prophetic voice. Rome ruled with iron authority. Religious institutions were active but largely ritualistic. Many had adjusted to oppression. Many had accepted spiritual dryness as normal.
Yet heaven was watching for hearts that were still burning.

In Gospel of Luke 2:25 we read:
“And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.”

Notice the language carefully.
He was just — his character aligned with God.
He was devout — his discipline was unwavering.
He was waiting — expectation had not died within him.
The Holy Ghost was upon him — intimacy preceded revelation.
Verse 26 says:
“And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.”
Revelation is entrusted to the watchful.
Clarity belongs to those who remain spiritually awake.
Simeon did not allow:

Political instability
Religious corruption
Cultural decline
to extinguish his anticipation.

Then there was Anna.
Luke 2:37 describes her:
“Which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.”
She was elderly. She had endured loss. She had lived through decades of apparent silence from heaven. Yet she refused bitterness. She refused compromise. She refused spiritual fatigue.

She worshiped.
She fasted.
She prayed.

When Mary and Joseph carried the infant Jesus into the temple, the majority saw only an ordinary child. But watchful eyes saw salvation.
Luke 2:30–32 records Simeon’s declaration:
“For mine eyes have seen thy salvation… A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.”

They were counted worthy to see the Redeemer.
Why? Because they remained awake when others drifted into religious routine. Darkness does not disqualify revelation — spiritual dullness does.

Simeon and Anna represent a generation that overcame:
Deception
Ritualism
Cultural compromise
Political oppression
by maintaining prayerful alertness.
And they did not miss their moment.

THE APOSTOLIC GENERATION

Urgent, Watchful, and Faithful in Responsibility
After the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the Apostles became the next prophetic generation of watchmen.
Before ascending, Jesus warned them in Gospel of Mark 13:33:
“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.”
And again in Gospel of Matthew 24:42:
“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”

They believed His return was imminent. Yet they did not retreat into isolation or abandon earthly duty.
Instead, they:
Preached with boldness
Endured persecution
Established churches
Wrote Scripture
Discipled nations

Expectation did not produce laziness. Expectation produced holiness. Peter wrote in 1 Peter 4:7:
“But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.”

Paul warned in 1 Thessalonians 5:6:
“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”

The Apostolic Church faced:
False teachers
Roman hostility
Internal compromise
Doctrinal confusion
Yet they maintained spiritual vigilance.
They did not set dates — for Jesus had declared in Mark 13:32:
“But of that day and that hour knoweth no man… but the Father.”
Instead, they lived in tension:
Fully engaged in earthly mission
Fully expectant of heavenly return
This balance is crucial.
To watch is not to withdraw from society.
To pray is not to abandon responsibility.
To expect His coming is not to neglect Kingdom advancement.
The Apostles understood a powerful truth:
The doctrine of the Second Coming purifies the believer.
1 John 3:3 says:
“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
Hope produces holiness.
Expectation produces endurance.

OUR GENERATION: ALERT AMID GLOBAL DELUSION

IThe Urgency of Spiritual Wakefulness
Now we arrive at our own time — an era of technological acceleration, moral redefinition, and spiritual confusion.
The warnings of Christ feel startlingly relevant.
In Gospel of Luke 21:34–35 He said:
“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.”

Notice the danger is internal before it is external.
Overcharged hearts.
Distraction.
Anxiety.
Carelessness.

The greatest threat is not persecution —
It is spiritual numbness.
In Matthew 24:37–39: “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be… and knew not until the flood came.”
The people in Noah’s day were not ignorant of daily life — they were indifferent to divine warning.

Today we see:
Rapid spread of false doctrines
Institutionalized compromise
Idolization of systems
Moral confusion celebrated
Spiritual authority resisted
Yet the solution has not changed.
Luke 21:36 declares:
“Watch ye therefore, and pray always…”
This is not optional. It is survival.
Matthew 24:40–41 warns:
“Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.”
Outward proximity does not equal inward readiness.
Some will be spiritually awake.
Others will be spiritually distracted.
The separation will be sudden.

THE MARKS OF A WATCHFUL GENERATION

A watchful generation will:

  1. Guard Their Hearts
    Refusing spiritual intoxication with culture.
  2. Live in Persistent Prayer
Like Anna — day and night devotion.
  3. Maintain Spirit Sensitivity
Like Simeon — led by the Holy Ghost.
  4. Advance the Kingdom Daily
Like the Apostles — responsible and fruitful.
  5. Reject Date-Setting but Embrace Urgency
    Trusting the Father’s timing.
  6. Endure Without Compromise
Standing firm against deception. A FINAL PROPHETIC APPEAL
The question before us is not whether Christ will return.
The question is whether we will be awake when He does.
    Will we be found:
    Overcharged with distraction?
    Spiritually asleep?
    Entangled in world systems?
    Or will we stand:
    Alert
    Prayerful
    Pure
    Faithful
The End-time is not merely about horrors to escape.
It is about glory to behold.
It is about standing before the Son of Man without shame.
It is about hearing the words every faithful servant longs to hear:
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
    Just as Simeon saw salvation,
    Just as Anna proclaimed redemption,
Just as the Apostles endured in hope,
So must we remain watchful until He appears.
    The trumpet will sound.
    The skies will open.
    The King will return.
And only the awake will rejoice without fear.
    Let us be that generation.
    CONCLUDING PROPHETIC PRAYERS
“And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” — Mark 13:37
  7. Prayer for Spiritual Awakening and Watchfulness
    Father in Heaven,
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ, we humble ourselves before You.
Awaken us from every form of spiritual slumber. Shake us from complacency. Deliver us from dullness of heart and heaviness of spirit. Your Word declares in Epistle to the Romans 13:11:
“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep…”
Lord, if we have been distracted by the cares of this life, forgive us. If our hearts have been overcharged with anxiety, pleasure, or ambition, cleanse us.
    Teach us to watch.
Let us not be spiritually intoxicated by the spirit of this age. Guard our hearts according to Book of Proverbs 4:23:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Holy Spirit, sharpen our discernment. Make us sensitive to Your voice. As You guided Simeon, guide us. As You sustained Anna, sustain us.
Let our lamps not go out.
  8. Prayer for Holiness and Endurance
    Righteous Father,
Your Word says in First Epistle of John 3:3:
“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
    Purify us, Lord.
Cleanse our motives. Refine our character. Burn away compromise. Expose hidden sin. Strengthen us to walk in holiness in a generation that normalizes darkness.
We refuse deception. We reject falsehood. Anchor us in truth according to Gospel of John 17:17:
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
When persecution rises, give us courage.
When compromise pressures us, give us conviction.
When weariness whispers, give us endurance.
Let us not grow weary in well doing. Establish us as a faithful remnant in our time.
  9. Prayer for a Life of Ceaseless Prayer
    Lord of Glory,
You commanded in Gospel of Luke 21:36:
“Watch ye therefore, and pray always…”
Teach us to pray without ceasing. Stir in us the spirit of intercession. Make our lives altars of devotion. May worship rise from us day and night.
Let our homes become houses of prayer.
Let our churches become centers of revival.
Let our hearts remain continually before You.
As Anna “served God with fastings and prayers night and day,” let perseverance be birthed in us.
We ask not for emotional excitement —
    We ask for sustained fire.
  10. Prayer for Faithful Responsibility While We Watch
    Lord,
    Keep us balanced and wise.
While we expect Your appearing, let us be diligent in our assignments. Let us work faithfully, love sincerely, serve humbly, and advance Your Kingdom daily.
Protect us from idle speculation and date-setting, for You declared in Gospel of Mark 13:32:
“But of that day and that hour knoweth no man… but the Father.”
Instead, make us sober and vigilant. Teach us to occupy until You come. May our expectation produce holiness, not passivity.
Let us be found faithful stewards when You appear.
  11. Prayer to Be Counted Worthy
    Merciful Savior,
Your Word warns that one will be taken and another left. We tremble at that reality, yet we stand in hope.
Strengthen us to endure until the end.
Let us be among those who overcome deception.
Let us be among those who refuse spiritual sleep.
Let us be among those who stand without shame.
According to Gospel of Matthew 24:13:
“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”
    Grant us endurance.
And when the trumpet sounds, when the heavens open, when the Son of Man appears in glory — let us stand before You with joy.
    Let us hear:
    “Well done.”
    Final Declaration
    We declare:
    We will watch.
    We will pray.
    We will remain alert.
    We will endure.
We will not be overcome by deception.
We will not surrender to spiritual lethargy.
By Your grace, we will be a watchful generation — ready at Your appearing.
In the powerful name of Jesus Christ,
