Ruth Elton, legendary British-turned-Nigerian missionary passes on @ 91

Ruth Elton, the legendary British-turned Nigerian missionary who has been in Nigeria since 1937 has passed on.

She died at about 12 noon on Saturday August 30 at age of 91.

One of the those who worked closely with her, Pastor Ojueromi Omotayo; confirmed to church Times that the late missionary transited peacefully at her Ilesha home.

He said there were plans to celebrate her 91st birthday on September 7 before information came that she had gone to glory.

Ruth Elton was only child of Pa Sidney Elton the renowned missionary who mentored many of the leading preachers in Nigeria.

She came from the UK with her mother, Hannah to join her father, Pa Sidney Elton in Ilesha, Nigeria in 1937.

At the time she came to Nigeria it was not possible to maintain dual citizenship . Rather than hold into her British citizenship she decided to naturalise as a Nigeria citizen. This was purely because of her love for Nigeria and the need to do missions in the country.

Her parents lived and were buried in Ilesha after their demise.

Ruth followed in the path of missions like her parents. She however chose to do missions in Kogi State and several parts of the middle belt of Nigeria.

A polyglot, Ruth made great inroads among people of the middle belt. She was there for several years doing missions and planting churches before she retired to Ilesha where she lived before she passed on.
