The chairman of the Lagos chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria Bishop Stephen Adegbite has cautioned Lagosians against making toxic comments on the outcome of the presidential election in Nigeria
He also congratulated the declared winner of the poll, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
He gave the note of caution on Tuesday March 1 while addressing journalists in Lagos.
Adegbite said, ‘ we are not oblivious to toxic comments from some individuals and groups within and outside the state calling for cancellation of what has been a credible process going by all we can see.
“As a responsible organisation and leaders of Christian community in Lagos we deem it fit to call for caution, restrain and demand responsibility from such people and others who may still intend to join such act’
While acknowledging there were skirmishes in Lagos, he said the situation was brought under control before it escalated.
He also congratulated the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi who made a brilliant showing in Lagos by wining the state in the presidential election.
Adegbite assured the Christian community that no one is in any form of danger of any kind in Lagos. ”The government of the state has promised to continue to provide level playing field for all, and Lagos will continue to be home for all and for all.
‘We urge everyone to go about their daily activities without fear , concerns or worries.’
He rejoiced with Asiwaju Tinubu on the outcome of the polls whole praying that his tenure as president of Nigeria will spell good for all.
Adegbite explained that his involvement with Asiwaju Tinubu was on a personal ground adding that there was no way he could deny him at the time he needed him most.
He said, ‘I have known Asiwaju and his family for 23 years. If you journey with anyone for 23 years it will be difficult to deny him when he needed you most. The statement I made at a time that we needed to support him was taken out of context by the press. I was speaking as a friend of Asiwaju family. We must separate that from being the chairman of CAN.
“As a friend of Asiwaju I saw in him somebody that is not a religious bigot. Asiwaju presidency will never Islamise Nigeria. I was one of those that fought for a Christian governor in Lagos. I made sure we got a Christian in office.
” Let me assure Nigerians both at home and abroad that Asiwaju government will not Islamise Nigeria..if we vote in Asiwaju’s house today Christians will win because there are more Christians in his house.’
Adegbite recalled when Asiwaju was governor of Lagos state saying he made a lasting impression on the Christian community.
We had a yearly programme in Lagos.. For 8 years that he was governor he never missed it. We believe in the next four years Nigeria will know they have something to be grateful for.
The National Convener of the Progressive Christian Clerics Association Pastor Timothy Ademola who was also at the conference said God has given Nigeria a leader in Tinubu’.
He said ‘ it is God that gives power to those who come to power. When power was ceded to Asiwaju we know that the power was given to him by God..I call on all brothers and sisters to realise that this is the work of God. We believe the resurrection message of God. I believe God has chosen a Cyrus to lead is. I call on all faithfull to realise this. God is the owner of power and he has given it to Asiwaju. ‘
